Jump between falling platforms to stay above the laser, and soak the bomb with water balloons to stop it exploding!

--

A horrible frog monster is terrorising the city, leaping from rooftops and dropping water balloons!

Luckily, the police have set up a huge laser barrier, and they're going to blow the monster up with a big bomb!

There's just one problem.

You are the monster.

Jump between falling platforms using directional buttons and the A button (Z/J/Alt on keyboard) and drop water balloons with the B button (X/K/Ctrl on keyboard).

Keep the bomb wet to stop it exploding! Your score increases every time you hit it.

Don't touch the laser!

This game is inspired by classic arcade titles, as well as the Game & Watch series of handhelds. When making this game, I researched the Nintendo classic Donkey Kong, and was inspired by the design wisdom of Gunpei Yokoi.

Yokoi made games by giving the player two simple tasks to do at the same time. When the player has to choose between them, the gameplay becomes challenging. In Froggy Kong, I approached this by making the player jump between platforms whilst also throwing water balloons.

While I had considered first making a traditional platformer, and then making a collection of minigames (similar to a Game & Watch Gallery title) I decided to focus on making one simple game with the highest possible level of polish that I could achieve.

In spite of this simple design, this one game mechanic took three months to perfect. This is actually a very complex game, featuring:

  • Four moving platforms that speed up throughout the game
  • One moving bomb with a ticking countdown timer
  • Projectiles
  • Tile swapping to achieve the laser effect
  • Palette swapping
  • Scenes with more unique tiles than should be possible on the Game Boy under normal circumstances
  • Multiple sprites layered on top of each other to add additional colours

Not only is this by far the most complicated game I've ever made, it pushes the Game Boy Color to its absolute technical limits in several respects, especially relating to graphics and timings.

Because of this, if you experience any glitches, particularly around graphics, please report them so I can see if I can fix the problems.

This game was made using GB Studio with the Platformer+, Platformer+ Platforms, and Advanced Dialogue plugins.

The game is designed for Game Boy Color only and will not run on original Game Boy.

Fun and simple pick up and play gameplay! I've already gone back to this one a handful of times! Nice work!

Thank you very much! I'm glad you've been enjoying it!

Simple, stylish, clear game&watch DNA (although g&w games tend to be a lot more grid oriented, for obvious reasons). I had some slight graphical issues (line of random colours across the screen on the title screen after one of my game overs) but nothing that affected gameplay. You may also want to adjust the resolution on the HTML, since there are big black bars on the sides. My current high score 25 :)

Ah, thank you for letting me know about the glitch. That happened to me once during testing but I couldn't replicate it, and it's probably a result of pushing the background tile limits too far. I'll look into simplifying the backgrounds and hopefully that'll help with this issue.

You're a superstar for reporting the bug, thanks again!

A lot of fun, but super hard with touch controls. ๐Ÿ˜†

Loved the graphics and animation.

Thank you! Yeah, it's not easy on mobile ๐Ÿ˜…

The artstyle is nice. The gameplay is simple but solid, Good for killing time

Thank you! That was my hope, that it would be a good portable game to pick up and play for a few minutes at a time.

It's tough! Love the colorful art :)

Thank you! Sorry it's so tough, I made an easy mode but I didn't have time to thoroughly bug test it before the game jam ended so I left it out to be safe.

Plus I personally think I like it better with the extra challenge!

Grest game! As you say, I feel that inspiration on g&w titles. Very cool colors and art

Thank you! I'm glad the G&W vibes come across, for better or worse!

38 High score!
That's a funny game, felt a bit strange to get going (but mostly because I barely read the description), but once I understood it's a nice level of challenge! Awesome art and music, congratulations!

Thanks! Great job on your high score, I'm glad you enjoyed the game! Yeah, I think it would probably benefit from a tutorial in-game to help make things a bit clearer, thanks for the feedback!

My high score was 16 :)

Great job! I hope you had fun with it, it is quite a tough game :)

I did and it is. I think when I put it on my gameboy I could get a better score I am so bad at keyboard.

I have literally given myself repetitive strain in my wrists from playtesting this on a keyboard! ๐Ÿ˜
